Apple kills its iOS app “Music memo”

In 2016, Apple introduced the app on iPhone and iPad Musical memo. The latter wanted to allow musicians in particular to record melodies and other composition ideas, simply and quickly.

It was an application that I appreciated for its successful ergonomics and above all a basic design for a “straight to the point” effect. In addition, it has a convenient export functionality to Logic and GarageBand. Without forgetting his intelligent analysis of rhythms and chords.

Unfortunately, as announced in a post last December, the Music Memo app no longer available since March 1. Apple removed it from its app store. Users who downloaded it before March 1, however, can find it in their purchase history and thus redownload it if the app has been deleted in the meantime.

If you have ever made recordings with the Music Memo app, be aware that they can be migrated to the Voice Recorder app. We recommend that you do this as soon as possible as Music Memo may not be supported on future versions of iOS.

Now, for on-the-fly audio recordings, Apple only offers l’app Dictaphone, which, although it turns out to be quite successful, does not go as far as the defunct Musical Memo app in terms of sound creation.

If Dictaphone is not enough for you, you can turn to GarageBand, the iPhone and iPad version of Apple’s free audio sequencer.

No more Musical Memos, but why?

Still, the removal of the Music Memo application raises questions. What could be the reasons for the withdrawal of the app? Because the event is rather extraordinary. It’s rare to see Apple trash a native application that has been available for several years on iPhone and iPad. If we are optimistic for the future of musicians with the Cupertino company, we can imagine that a new music app is in development for iOS, a kind of lighter version of GarageBand. But no rumor or clue spotted in iOS has so far left room for such a possibility.

And then, because we always have the right to dream, we hope one day to see Logic arrive on iOS, at least on iPad, to finally have on a tablet an Apple audio sequencer worthy of the name, perfectly integrated and linked to the macOS version. For now, the only trace of Logic on iOS is the Logic Remote app (available here on the App Store), which allows you to control the music software on Mac from an iPhone or iPad. It’s already good, but we would like a lot more … Hope gives life!

Do you regret the disappearance of the Music Memo app on iOS?
