Apple became the king of the world’s mobile phones throughout the fourth quarter (Q4) yesterday, but Samsung is the ruler in 2020. That’s the results of the recently released smartphone market research IDC.
During Q4 2020, the technology giant from Cupertino shipped 90.1 million iPhones worldwide. Thanks to the iPhone 12 Series, they were able to increase shipments by 22.2% from the previous year, thus making Apple control 23.4% of the global mobile market share.
Samsung is in second place with 73.9 cellphone units shipped from October to December 2020. This number is up 6.2% from the previous, now the South Korean vendor controls 19.2%.
Xiaomi surprisingly came in third. The growth of the company made by Lei Jun has soared in the fourth quarter yesterday.
They are able to ship 43.3 million mobile units. Up 32% from the previous year and made the market share to 11.2%.
Oppo is in fourth position with shipments of 33.8 million mobile units. Up 10.7% from the previous year and made this Chinese vendor have a market share of 8.8%.
The blocking of the US still has an impact on Huawei sales. There was a significant decrease to minus 42.4% from the previous year.
Throughout the fourth quarter of 2020, Huawei can only ship 32.3 million units of mobile phones. While last year they could send 56.2 million units. As a result, now its market share is only 8.2%, down from 15.2%.
In total, during Q4 2020 there were 385.9 million cellphones shipped. An increase from 369.9 million units in the same period the previous year. With an increase of 4.3%, it shows the market has started to recover after being hit by the pandemic.

Apart from the Q4 report, IDC also shared the total number of shipments throughout 2020. As mentioned earlier, Samsung is the owner.
A total of 266.7 million units of Samsung mobile phones have been shipped worldwide. It’s just that this number is according to 9% from the previous period with total shipments of 295.8 million.
Apple is in second place with 206.1 million iPhone shipped, an increase of 7.9% from 2019. Huawei followed with a total shipment of 189 million cell phones, according to 21.5%.
Xiaomi is in fourth place with 147.8 million cellphone shipments, a 17.6% increase from the previous. And in fifth place Vivo has shipped 111.7 million cellphones, according to 9.4% of 2019.
In total, throughout 2020, the number of cellphone shipments worldwide reached 1.292 billion units. This figure is down 5.9% from 1,372 in 2019. Predictably, the pandemic is the culprit.
