As we have told you on other occasions, this fashion for phones with folding screens has only just begun and it is more than evident that at the moment when they become a mass product, we will not carry other types of terminals in our pockets. And Apple, which usually reacts to these changes relatively calmly, seems to be already working on a device about which they still have some important doubts.
The one that most is what will be the design of that folding iPhone, if Californians will opt for a so-called “shell” model or rather of those known as “book”. To the first belong bets that are already on the market such as Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip, or Motorola’s RAZR. Of the second we have also very illustrative examples of the Korean company through those Galaxy Z Fold 2, which arrived in September of this year or Microsoft, with that Surface Duo that does not have folding panels as such, but rather two separate screens by a hinge.
Be that as it may, what Jon Prosser, one of the leakers most reputed in the Apple universe, is that those of Tim Cook are looking for what that will be form factor adopt your foldable iPhone to get to the market and the best way to do it is to test it in depth to make a decision as soon as possible.
Apple’s critical decision moment
It has been in one of his last videos on his YouTube channel where Jon Prosser has revealed that Apple is at a critical moment in that folding iPhone project Because after developing several different prototypes, it is time to choose which one will reach the stores and, therefore, opt for the one that they believe has the greatest potential to be a sales success.
Right now, Apple has two very specific ideas already defined: on the one hand an iPhone style Galaxy Z Flip, like the concept design that you can see in the opening image, and on the other a phone more similar to Microsoft’s Surface Duo, which are still two mobiles joined by a hinge that allows them to work in a coordinated way. Without a doubt, having to choose only one, it seems that the first is the one with the most ballots, if they want to boast of a folding panel as such.
Those tests they are being carried out in a Foxconn factory in Shenzhen and it would only be about the housings, as a test of how reliable the closing and opening mechanism of the terminals is. What does seem to have already been decided is the type of screen it will have, OLED and foldable manufactured by Samsung in the event that they opt for the “shell” model.
Another of the important data revealed by Prosser is the date on which that Apple folding phone could reach the market: if the plans do not change, the Americans work with a calendar in which this model would land in stores by September 2022 or 2023, that is, in just one year and nine months in the best of cases, along with the (hypothetical) iPhone 14. Of course, we will see what form factor choose and, above all, if we talk about a technology that can be sold at reasonably cheap prices.
