In what can only be seen as a complete reversal, Apple has now decided to start offering tool spare parts for its smartphones and computers. In order for them to be repaired by the consumers themselves.
For several years, Apple has taken a stand against the right to home repairs of electronics becoming a legal right. Instead, they are forcing customers to turn to Apple themselves or certified third-party players to have their devices repaired.
Now, like a flash from clear skies, they have done what can only be seen as a complete reversal in the subject. Apple has now confirmed that they plan to launch an online store for spare parts where consumers can click home components and tools. Thus, you then open up for end customers to be able to repair their units on their own if you feel safe enough.
Initially, the initiative will offer components for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. This includes the components that most often need service such as screen, camera and batteries. The online store will then expand over time and begin offering components such as M1 processors for Macs.
Nothing for the beginner
Although Apple will offer manuals and other necessary information, repairs of smartphones and laptops are nothing that should be taken seriously. Apple itself mentions that the initiative is intended for customers with experience and expertise in this type of electronics pilling. Although the online store will be open to everyone, it is worth taking an extra think about whether you can manage to perform a repair on your own.
After customers have ordered spare parts and made the necessary repairs, it will also be possible to send the old components back to Apple. An initiative they started to facilitate the recycling of old electronics.
Exactly when or if the new online store will be available in Sweden is unclear. Initially, the US will have access to the store, but Apple has confirmed that it will expand next year. What price tags the different tools and components will be is also something that time will tell.
