Almost two years ago, Samsung and Huawei respectively presented their first folding smartphones. Quickly followed by Motorola, which we had not necessarily seen coming to this field, the two giants have not yet had to deal with competition from their American rival Apple in this area. And if, for the time being, the firm is indeed focusing on the launch of the classic iPhone concept, Bloomberg ensures that the colossus of Cupertino has the idea of trying, too, folding smartphones. The thing could nevertheless take several years before materializing… because for the time being Apple would be only at a stage of preliminary research. It is also quite possible that Apple chooses not to go further in the development of a first folding device.
Folding-screen iPhones are not for now!
According to information from Bloomberg, the firm would have anyway discussed internally a folding iPhone whose screen would unfold to reach a size close to the 6.7 inches of the current iPhone 12 Pro Max. This diagonal corresponds more or less to the size of other folding smartphones on the market, between 6 and 8 inches depending on the model. Still according to Bloomberg, Apple would also bet on a screen with an invisible hinge and would choose, like Samsung and Huawei, to add all the electronics to the back of the foldable panel. However, we learn that at this time, Apple has only started to develop prototypes of foldable screens, and this without taking a close interest in a product that would exploit them. In other words, the brand does not yet have functional folding iPhone prototypes in its labs. As mentioned above, the marketing of an iPhone equipped with such technology is still far from being topical.

If it will therefore be necessary to be patient before being able to possibly buy a folding iPhone, we know a little more about Apple’s plans for its future iPhone 13. The device would notably reintroduce Touch ID using a sensor fingerprint placed under the screen. The latter would serve as a complement to the Face ID facial identification technology, and would aim to simplify the unlocking of the iPhone when – Covid obliges – a mask is worn. On some models, Apple could also choose to completely abandon its Lightning port in favor of “wireless” MagSafe charging, introduced on the iPhone 12. File transfer could continue to be done by way of example. AirDrop. Information that echoes rumors that we had already mentioned last year.
