Apple is Gaining Ground on Samsung in the Smartphone Market

Apple is increasingly catching up with Samsung in its market share in the smartphone market, according to figures from market researcher Canalys. Of all smartphones sold, 20 percent are Samsung and 17 percent are iPhones.

Apple and Samsung saw their global market share decline last year. At Samsung it was a decline of 2 percentage points, at Apple it was 1 percentage point.

The market shares of the three largest smartphone manufacturers are getting closer. Xiaomi is number three with a market share of 14 percent. That share has not changed.

The smartphone market has been shrinking since the beginning of last year. According to the market researcher, consumers spend less money on products such as smartphones. This is due to, among other things, high inflation and concerns about an economic recession.

According to Canalys, 1 percent fewer smartphones were sold worldwide in the period between July and September. The European smartphone market in particular is shrinking rapidly. Last month, the market researcher reported that 13 percent fewer smartphones will probably be sold in Europe this year.

Yet Canalys does not see the future bleakly. The market researcher expects that 132 million smartphones will be sold in Europe next year. That is a growth of 7 percent. Elsewhere, the market researcher is already seeing a recovery.
