For the first quarter of this year, according to agentury Strategy Analytics has sold 340 million smartphones worldwide. Last year, it was only 275 million. The year-on-year increase of 35 percent is impressive, according to the agency, the market has not grown significantly since 2015.
But it’s not as famous as it seems at first glance. The covid-19 factor plays a big role here, but even so, the results are positive. Last year’s first quarter was the first to hit the covid-19. Therefore, sales for the first quarter of last year fell by 17 percent year on year from 330 million in 2019 to 275 million.
Therefore, some correction was expected, but the increase to 340 million clearly exceeded expectations. Also because the coronavirus pandemic is far from over. But the market has already recovered in the second half of last year and now seems to have returned to normal, even with positive growth compared to 2019.
Looking at the results of individual manufacturers, it is clear that all the big players did well, ie the top five, which Strategy Analytics traditionally publishes. More precisely, the current five largest smartphone producers did well, the smallest year-on-year increase is the first Samsung, which gained an extra 32 percent compared to last year.
Vivo and Xiaomi have the largest increase, these two Chinese manufacturers improved by a significant 85 and 80 percent year on year. Oppo then added 68 percent year-on-year and Apple 44 percent. Specific figures are given in the table, including the situation in the first quarter of 2019, in order to eliminate coronavirus skewed data for last year.

The table also shows that one large mark fell out of the rankings. Last year, Huawei was number two. That was already under US embargo, but he did wonderfully in the Chinese market. But the embargo caught up with him there, too limited access to components so it has nothing to sell.
In the table, ie in the world’s top five, he was replaced by Vivo and in the position of world number two Apple. Apple’s results are impressive. The company has the cheapest device for 13,000 crowns, and according to other statistics it is obvious that the best-selling ones from Apple’s portfolio are not the cheap models, but the expensive ones. The same statistics show that the best-selling models of Samsung and Xiaomi are cheap devices, in the latter case even the cheapest ones.
