Apple must withdraw the iPhone 12 from the market in France. The French frequency regulator ANFR states that the specific absorption rate exceeds the legal limits. France could possibly order a recall if Apple doesn’t take action.
Apple must immediately prevent the iPhone 12 devices that are still circulating in the supply chain from being sold, writes the ANFR in a press release. The company must also “take corrective action as quickly as possible” to ensure that affected phones that have already been sold comply with European standards. This must be done within two weeks. If Apple doesn’t do this, the company will have to issue a recall.
Agence Nationale des Fréquences, or ANFR, manages all radio frequencies in France. As part of this, the regulator tests phones for the exposure of the human body to electromagnetic waves. During those tests, the ANFR came to the conclusion that the iPhone 12 had too high a temperature specific absorption rate has. Sar is a measure of the amount of radiation from a device that is absorbed by a body. According to the ANFR, this is 5.74W per kilogram for the iPhone 12 when the phone is in a pocket or is being held. The legal maximum is 4.0W/kg within the EU.
From Tuesday, September 12, the iPhone 12, which was introduced in 2020, may no longer be sold in France. The ANFR refers to this as a ‘temporary’ ban. Apple no longer sells that phone; the company introduced its iPhone 15 series on Tuesday evening and after that introduction stopped offering the 12 worldwide. However, the phone must also be obtained from other French stores. The ANFR will check whether this has indeed happened.
The sar of previously sold iPhone 12 devices must also be returned to European limits. This should be possible via a software update, said French Deputy Minister for Digital Economy Jean-Noel Barrot according to Reuters to French daily Le Parisien. If that happens, the ANFR will test the device again.
Apple refutes the ANFR’s findings, reports Reuters news agency. The tech giant has provided the regulator with lab results from its own tests and tests from independent parties, which according to the company show that the iPhone 12 complies with global legislation and Sar requirements. The company “disputes the results of the ANFR investigation” and “continues to engage with the agency to demonstrate compliance.”
