It is a bit striking though. Apple has a reputation for surprising and innovative, but it is also the tech company with the most consistency. iPhone OS appeared in 2007, iPhone OS 2 in 2008, iPhone OS 3 in 2009 and iOS 4 in 2010. Those years are an eternity in the mobile market, but if you had to predict in 2010 which number iOS would be in 2021 you probably guessed correctly: iOS 15.
In any case, it’s a crazy story; the software was first called iPhone OS, but that became iOS because the iPad came along. For a few years now, the iPad has had its own fork under the name iPadOS, but in the meantime the operating system for iPhones is still called iOS.
Apple’s WWDC developer conference took place this week and, as always, the company showcased new versions of its operating systems. In this preview, we look at two: iOS for iPhones and iPadOS for iPads. What’s new and what has changed in this new version?
