Apple iOS 14 lets users stream YouTube videos in 4k and hdr via vp9 codec – Sound and Vision – News

What I mean is that there are closed platforms. That’s kind of a market in the hand of a single company.

For example, if Microsoft succeeds with a good product at a reasonable price, that’s fine, but if they then keep their product closed source or don’t release specsheets, no one can take part in that market without squeezing. Ultimately, the entire office market was hijacked by Microsoft.

I like it when companies are successful, but not when they make competition in their own market impossible.

If anything hits the shins of capitalism, it’s the big tech companies.

I would rather see legislation dictating that anything that can undermine competition should either be open source under a copyleft license, or documented and offered alongside the product, at no cost. And if these specs are not correct, that the product has to be adapted to the specs, whether or not by the judgment of a court.

Another condition for fair competition is also the opening of platforms. Let multiple stores be available on an iPhone, with integration in the Appstore.

Edit: in the case of Youtube, there is no competitive disadvantage: your service can simply search YouTube and display embedded videos on your own website.

Edit2: But it can be done better by decentralizing the whole.
