In the not too distant future, automobiles will diagnose their own breakdowns and breakdowns, and make an appointment with the workshop to repair them. One step towards that future is the windshield patented by Apple, able to detect cracks and even automatically contact the workshop to request a repair appointment.
It is a system that uses a conductive layer with a network of receptors inside the glass. The system passes small currents in vertical and horizontal direction, and detects cracks or anomalies by comparing the ohmic resistance of the receivers. According to the patent text, “With these receivers, resistance measurements can be made in conductive layers to detect cracks”.
As a complement, the patent also reflects that when the car detects the crack, it can schedule an appointment with the workshop to go to repair it. Apple even goes further, as it describes a scenario with autonomous cars that go to the workshop alone at times when their owner does not use them.
Apple has spent years developing a car on Project Titan and is registering numerous patents related to different aspects of a car, some of them focused on the windshields and side windows.
After patenting a few months ago a system capable of detecting and identifying objects and pedestrians in low visibility conditions, and a windshield with augmented reality; Now it has registered two more patents related to automobile glassware, since in addition to the windshield that detects cracks in the glass by itself, the firm has registered self-tinting glass. In this case the product patent highlights that “The windows of a car can be provided with an active modular layer having an electrically adjustable optical property.” This active layer may have a pair of electrodes to apply electric fields to adjust the transmission of light. through glass and its reflectivity.
“It can be difficult to incorporate systems like these effectively into a vehicle. If you are not careful, the window frames may be unsightly, may be insufficiently flexible and / or not having adequate performance ”, details the patent. “This window can have an active layer and additional structures embedded in the inner polymer sheet or it can be otherwise positioned between the outer and inner structural layers. Additional structures may include dielectric thin films, conductive layers such as thin film metallic layers, layers that form filters to block infrared light, visible and / or ultraviolet, layers to diffuse light and other structures ”.
According to the information provided by the experts of Carglass, another of the patents is that of a windshield with augmented reality, which can display directions, maps, and even FaceTime calls. This head up display would have very advanced functionalities, such as detecting the level of attention and stress of the occupants, through a system that monitors the movement of the eyes, body posture, body temperature, blink frequency, frequency heart and body gestures. This augmented reality system is capable of identifying streets, buildings, shops … And also to mark them with graphic elements on the windshield when the driver asks, for example, “a greengrocer ahead on the left.” In the same way, the system could recognize gestures or where the vehicle user is looking while requesting information from the environment, to show it in their field of vision and right in the position in which the real object is.
Apple is also devising smart mirrors, which detect the movements of the driver’s face and the presence of surrounding objects, vehicles or people to know when they have to be retracted or extended. And with a comprehensive camera system, the system is capable of projecting images in the driver’s environment, on the side window or on the windshield.
