Apple Introduces “Stolen Device Protection” Feature in Latest iOS 17.3 Beta Update – A Game-Changer for iPhone Security

TRIBUNGORONTALO.COM — Apple is making a breakthrough again by preparing innovative features in the latest iOS update, namely iOS 17.3 Beta.

This latest feature, called “Stolen Device Protection,” is specifically designed to address the risk of thieves accessing user information, even if the perpetrator knows the target iPhone’s password.

“Stolen Device Protection” will provide extra protection by hiding user data and factory reset options behind Face ID technology.

Also eliminates the passcode fallback option that could potentially be exploited by thieves.

Passcode is known as a strong security measure to protect personal data in case the device is stolen by someone or simply lost.

But sometimes, having a password isn’t enough. In some conditions, the perpetrator of the theft usually knows the password used by the iPhone user.

That’s happened before. An iPhone user goes on a date with someone. However, his partner knew the password.

It allows him to change Apple ID credentials, access apps that normally use Face ID (such as banking apps), or reset the phone to factory settings for resale.

With the presence of “Stolen Device Protection,” Apple is trying to close this security gap.

This feature no longer allows thieves to use the victim’s passcode after Face ID fails, but instead requires the device owner’s face to continue the access process.

As additional information, MacRumors reports that users must activate Stolen Device Protection manually because this feature is not activated automatically.

When enabled, this feature will require Face ID to view or use saved passwords, apply for or view Apple Card, turn off Lost Mode, access Apple Cash and savings, use saved payment methods in Safari, set up a new device using a stolen iPhone, or factory reset the device.

For an extra layer of protection, Stolen Device Protection also implements a one-hour waiting period before changing Apple ID security settings (including passwords), changing the iPhone passcode, adding or disabling Face ID, or turning off Find My or Stolen Device Protection.

Stolen Device Protection is currently undergoing testing by developers with iOS 17.3 beta.

When iOS 17.3 is officially released, this feature will be available to all iPhone users compatible with the update, including iPhone XS and newer models.
