Users will be able to use a physical security key when logging in from a new device.

The US tech giant said that while there had been no reports of hacking into iCloud servers or iMessage exchanges so far, this step was necessary given the growing number of hacking cases.

As compiled by Metro, on Sunday (10/12/2022), users in the United States will be able to enable Enhanced Data Protection for iCloud storage for free later this year.

Once activated, Apple can’t help users recover photos, notes, voice memos, and about 20 other types of data if they forget their password. It will expand globally next year.

In iMessage, conversations between users who enable next year’s new contact key verification will receive automatic alerts about unknown devices that might snoop on the exchange.

Users can manually verify the security of their communications by matching the security code as well. The concept is the same as the service provided by the Signal messaging app.

In addition to the above security features, Apple also plans to provide other security programs aimed at celebrities, journalists, activists, politicians and other well-known figures who will be prime targets for hackers in the future.

According to ESET’s global cybersecurity consultant Jake Moore, having this security feature will help Apple users protect their sensitive data, considering that they are the main target of hackers.

They are often attacked through phishing scams or through theft of physical devices, but using this security key can reduce the risk and will certainly protect Apple accounts even more.

“Hardware security keys offer protection and peace of mind knowing they’re one of the most secure ways to log into an account, and are often offered as a very sensitive login method,” he says.

According to Moore, to get the full security benefits of this new feature, it is best to remove all other forms of account verification and rely solely on physical security keys to gain access which will prevent hackers from bypassing the chosen form of authentication.
