Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Apple will introduce a new security mode on the iPhone that can protect users from the threat of thieves or other cybercriminals.

The feature is named ‘Stole Device Protection’ (stolen device protection). The mechanism is that Apple’s system creates a second layer of security, so that thieves will have difficulty using the passcode to break into the cellphone.

If the iPhone is in a location that the user cannot normally reach and Stolen Device Protection is activated, the cellphone system will enforce two layers of security.

The cellphone system will ask for FaceID, which is a facial recognition feature to access the cellphone. FaceID will be requested in addition to the passcode, when thieves want to perform sensitive actions on the phone, such as viewing saved passwords.

Thieves will not be able to change the password or see the settings with just the passcode. Additionally, any attacker will not be able to change the Apple ID password or remove FaceID.

This feature was created after a report from The Wall Street Journal identified widespread fraud carried out by friends or people close to the victim.

Usually when at the bar, the victim openly mentions their passcode. The fraudster’s pretext is to look at photos or look after the victim.

Then, fraudsters steal the cellphone and use the passcode to remove all protection systems, such as FaceID and passwords to access sensitive files.

Now, with the iOS 17.3 update, criminals can no longer just rely on passcodes to gain control of other people’s iPhones. There are multiple layers that must be applied.

“In response to evolving iPhone user threats, we are always working to provide stronger protection to users and their data,” said an Apple representative.
