Apple Implements New Development Clause to Strengthen App Privacy Protection

Apple has announced a development clause that restricts unauthorized information collection from developers to strengthen privacy protection.

According to foreign media such as XDR on the 29th (local time), Apple announced on its official developer site that if a specific API was used during app development, the reason must be explained in detail.

Requests for data on the reason for using the API will be processed during the App Store registration process. If you do not submit the relevant data, the review will not proceed and you will not be allowed to register on the App Store.

This provision will be activated with the release of new operating systems (OS) scheduled for later this year, such as iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.

The reason why Apple announced the new development clause is to prevent misuse by developers and strengthen privacy protection. Some APIs are linked to functions used to collect data, and if used excessively, there is a risk of access to sensitive data such as the user’s fingerprint.

In order to prevent such misuse, Apple explains that the reason for using the API is specified in the privacy manifest, limiting it to work only for the intended purpose.

There are five APIs: file timestamp, system boot time, disk space, active keyboard, and user defaults.
