The American tech giant Apple halves the commission for developers who offer apps in the App Store and who achieve a turnover of up to 1 million dollars per year. The measure will not silence critics of the App Store.

For that group of developers, the tech company from Cupertino, California, is lowering the commission it charges on sales in the App Store from 30 percent to 15 percent. The newcomers also enjoy the discounted rate, the company reports Wednesday. It concerns the majority of developers, the company said.

Apple

says it wants to support developers during the corona crisis. Or even: accelerate innovation and support small businesses and independent developers.

The rate change will take effect on January 1. Eligible are developers who remain below the $ 1 million in app sales threshold in the previous calendar year. Anyone who exceeds the cap during the year will pay 30 percent commission from then on. Anyone who falls below the 1 million limit during a calendar year can enjoy the 15 percent rate again the following year.

Criticism

The 13 include Epic Games, the dating app Tinder, the music apps Spotify and Deezer, and news media united in News Media Europe. The latter group also includes the professional association Vlaamse Nieuwsmedia, to which Mediahuis, DPG Media and Mediafin (the publisher of De Tijd) belong.

The European Union is investigating the fact that Apple is forcing developers to use its system for payments in the apps.
