It’s a change no one expected: Apple has announced plans to sell spare parts so that anyone can repair their device without having to go through the company’s customer service department. It’s a 180-degree turn from old company policies.

As amazing as it can be, Apple has officially announced in a blog post the launch of an online ordering service for the sale of spare parts, such as displays, batteries and camera lenses for the iPhone 12 and 13 models. Since old company rules prohibited that maintenance of a device is done by a third party not affiliated with Apple, this announcement comes as a surprise, even though the company has been undertaking programs for some time to expand access to repairs for their products.

In addition to the company’s own efforts, the move also comes as a growing number of US states have introduced “Right to Redress” legislation. One of the aims of this legislation is to make it easier for people to repair their products, and it is aimed at financial and environmental benefits. As a first step, this new ordering service will only be available in the United States from 2022, but we can hope that it will also be implemented in European countries, including France. The company said in particular that the UK will be the second country to benefit from the service after the United States, reported The Guardian.

In its press release, however, Apple wants to warn its customers: only real technicians are able to replace defective parts of a product. In other words, lay users will always have to contact a professional to repair their devices.
