Apple sold a record number of iPhones in the United States during the second quarter of 2020, despite the coronavirus pandemic. 7 out of 10 smartphones sold in the country are iPhones or Samsung smartphones. However, sales of the Galaxy S20 are disappointing.

A new report from the research firm Canalys provides an overview of the smartphone market in the United States for the second quarter of 2020. Sales fell 5% compared to last year due in particular to the coronavirus, but we increased by 11% compared to the first quarter. After China’s second quarter iPhone sales boom, Apple set a new national record over the same period, shipping 15 million iPhones between April and June 2020.

These performances are due to iPhone SE launched in April, but also to the excellent sales of the iPhone 11. Apple shipped 15% more iPhone 11 than last year’s bestseller, iPhone XR. Another notable fact: 70% of smartphones sold in the United States are made in China, despite the trade war between the two countries.

Samsung remains good second despite disappointing sales of the Galaxy S20

Sales of Samsung smartphones have stagnated compared to the second quarter of 2019, which is already an achievement given the market contraction due to the pandemic. And especially knowing that Galaxy S20 series confirms disappointing sales. Samsung shipped 59% less of the S20 than the Galaxy S10 series at the same time last year. Once again, the manufacturer’s mid-range models saved the day, in this case the Galaxy A10 and A20.

Despite everything, Samsung managed to retain nearly a quarter of the market share (23.2%) while Apple accounts for nearly half of smartphone sales in the United States (47.1%). The data is simple: 7 out of 10 smartphones sold in the US are iPhones or Samsung smartphones. LG, which has disappeared from radar in Europe, closes the podium with an 11% market share. Lenovo (2.1%) and TLC (1.3%) come in 4th and 5th position.

Finally, another lesson from the report concerns the low penetration of 5G smartphones in the United States. Waiting the iPhone 12, no iPhone 5G is yet sold in the country. But this is not the only explanation. “ The store closures resulted in limited interactions with the demo models. Added to this is the decline in purchasing power due to the virus and still limited 5G coverage in the American suburbs. Consumers had many reasons to buy a 4G device“, Notes the cabinet.
