Apple Exhibition at Garche: Early Sell-Out and Limited Stock due to September Heat

The apples from the orchardists in Garche and surrounding areas were gobbled up in an hour this Sunday. Everything was sold during the fruit exhibition organized by the association in front of the local town hall. The intense heat limited the harvest. But fans will be able to catch up.

Apple lovers who did not set the alarm this Sunday morning are biting their fingers. All the fruits sold by the arborists of Garche and surrounding areas, during their fruit exhibition, found buyers in less than an hour. “The first ones were queuing from 9:20 a.m.,” reports the president, Gérard Conradt.

September temperatures disrupted so-called late varieties

It must be admitted that this year, stock was limited. The intense heat has disrupted the apple tree cycle. “The early varieties, like elstar or cybèle, arrived too early. » The summer temperatures experienced in September also disrupted so-called late varieties of apples, such as quirina, fuji and braeburn. “The trees are stressed by this heat, the fruit does not ripen,” continues Gérard Conradt. This discrepancy has an impact on the harvest. “There will be apples but later. » This is how the president of the arborists reassured the crestfallen faces who came to look for a crate at midday.

The association, which has around a hundred enthusiasts, will open the sale of apples, at low prices, in its sample orchard on Saturday mornings at the end of October. Nature still has to be lenient. Especially since the weather is not the only factor on which the picking depends. “There are many biting insects this year. »

Planting season

In the absence of juicy and fruity flesh, the public present at the traditional arborist festival, in front of the attached town hall of Garche, could always fall back on the stands of local producers and artisans from the area, the Vosges or Alsace. Cheese, honey, cold meats, potatoes, onions, apple juice (obviously) filled the stalls alongside basketry, knitting and homemade sewing items. The association also offered a space dedicated to planting trees. Because autumn is not easy for these fruit tree enthusiasts. “Planting is done at the end of November at Sainte Catherine. » So that the wood takes root.
