Apple Denies High Radiation Levels in iPhone 12; French Authorities Temporarily Suspend Sales

Krjogjacom – Jakarta – Sales of the iPhone 12 were temporarily suspended in France after authorities said the iPhone released in 2020 had high radiation levels, exceeding those permitted by European regulations.

Quoting Cnet, Friday (15/9/2023), Apple also denied accusations from the French National Frequency Agency that the iPhone 12 exceeded Europe’s specific radiation absorption level limit.

Apple said it had provided its own lab results and research results by third-party labs to regulators. These results show that the iPhone 12 complies with EU safety thresholds.

Through its website, Apple announced that the iPhone 12 has a SAR of 0.98 watts per kilogram when held to the ear and 0.99 watts per kilogram when carried or kept in a pocket. This number is far below France’s claim that the iPhone 12’s radiation level exceeds 2 watts per kg.

Previously, the French radio frequency manager, Agence Nationale des Frequences (ANFR) regularly monitored radio equipment. They regularly test marketed cellphones to check human exposure to electromagnetic waves.

According to ANFR, the iPhone 12 is considered not to comply with European regulations regarding the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) value which is a maximum of 2 watts per kilogram. SAR is a measurement of the amount of radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body when using a smartphone.

The SAR value of the iPhone 12 is assessed to exceed the threshold, when the cellphone comes into contact with the body, for example being held or placed in a trouser pocket.

However, it turns out that the SAR value of the iPhone 12 for carrying close to human skin is within the standards, according to research by Apple’s lab and third-party labs.

Previously, French minister for the digital economy, Jean-Noel Barrot, said that Apple could update its software to solve this highly rated smartphone radiation problem.
