Released a few days ago, a patent shows that Apple is currently working on cases using titanium for its future devices, particularly its laptops. Currently these machines have an anodized aluminum housing.
Titanium is stronger and more enduring than aluminum, but poses a problem of finish. In order to provide a shiny surface that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, the patent explains the techniques for carrying out this operation with a titanium substrate. However, it is a complex process which includes sandblasting, etching and chemistry phases. This process could also be applied to iPhones and iPads.
Apple had already tried the titanium experiment on its laptop PowerBook G4 Titanium in 2001, but then switched to aluminum in 2003 because the paint on the titanium model tended to peel. Currently, only the Apple Watch benefits from a titanium case on certain models.
Finally, another patent reveals that the manufacturer could offer laptops in the future with a matte black casing.
