Apple is reportedly currently working on developing its first virtual reality headset, reported Bloomberg. Already considered a high-end niche product, its release is scheduled for 2022 and thus precedes the arrival of the long-awaited augmented reality glasses from the Apple brand.
Apple goes virtual reality
N301: This is the code name for Apple’s very first VR headset. This one would be autonomous and wireless (as is the Oculus Quest) and would integrate a new chip made in Apple, even more powerful than the famous M1 revealed last year. The Cupertino company would also like to give it a higher resolution than that found on current high-end helmets, while making it smaller and lighter.

Like he usually does, Apple is ambitious about the manufacture of its new product that it wants innovative, powerful and design at the same time. A sizeable challenge given the delay already accumulated over its competitors, but far from impossible. For now, however, it seems that the firm has not yet achieved the expected results. According to the latest information, the prototypes would for the moment be too large and too heavy. Note also that these funds would incorporate a fan, which is rather unusual for Apple brand products.
On some prototypes, Apple would also test the integration external cameras allowing you to combine augmented reality features with this virtual reality headset. Their role, moreover, would be to track the movement of the hands in order to allow the user to use a virtual keyboard.
As we have previously pointed out, Apple wants its VR headset to be a premium product. It is thus expected thatit exceeds $ 1,000 on sale, when its competitors offer products at prices ranging from 300 to 900 dollars. A positioning that targets a niche audience, and of which the Cupertino company is well aware since, according to several sources, it expects to sell only 180,000 units per year and across the world.
A first launch to prepare users for augmented reality glasses?
For Apple, the release of his VR headset would actually be a way to prepare the general public for the release of their augmented reality glasses. Expected for years, these represent a real challenge for the apple brand which sees them as replacements for the smartphone.
If the latter too, are in the development phase under the code name N421, their release is not expected anytime soon. Indeed, they are currently only at the “architecture” stage, which means that Apple is still working on its underlying technologies… In other words, we are far from the mark!
