Apple could ditch the iPhone 6s from iOS 16

Six other devices would also remain stuck on iOS 15.

Each year, new iPhone models are created and to accompany them new versions of iOS. When a new operating system comes out, it’s common for manufacturers to discontinue support for older models, even though some manufacturers will try to update their devices for a few years before dropping them.

However, iOS 14 and iOS 15 continued to support the same devices as iOS 13. After 3 years, however, this support may end.

According to the site iPhoneSoft, Apple should end support for multiple devices with the release of iOS 16. iPhoneSoft thus evokes seven devices that will not benefit from iOS 16: iPhone SE (2016), iPhone 6s (2015), iPhone 6s Plus (2015), iPad 5 (2017), iPad Pro (2015), iPad mini 4 (2015), and iPad Air 2 (2014).

The iPhone 6s would thus retire after 7 years of service. iPhoneSoft explains this choice by pointing to the aging A9 / A9X chip present in the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad 5 and iPad Pro, while the iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2 are equipped with an A8 processor.

Still, it’s important to remember that while these devices do come to be unsupported by iOS 16, they will continue to work, as much as their age allows, on iOS 15.
