Apple Conquered, USB-C Becomes the Single Charger Cable in the European Union

Jakarta

Regulators European Union finally decided on a regulation that required all mobile phones, tablets and small electronic devices sold in Europe to use ports USB-C.

The European Commission has actually been working on a universal charger solution for more than a decade. However, this is the first time the rules have been decided, and will be implemented starting in 2024.

The devices included in this list include laptops, e-readers, earbuds, keyboards, mice, portable navigation devices, cellphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, handheld consoles, and portable speakers.

Starting in the spring of 2024, all devices that fall into this category are required to use a USB-C port for charging. There are exceptions for laptops that are granted waivers for 40 months before they are finally required to use USB-C.

Electronic devices that fall into this category, especially cellphones and tablets, are actually safe because most of them already use a USB-C port.

But there is one exception, namely the iPhone, where Apple has for years insisted on maintaining the Lightning port for charging.

If the iPhone released in 2024 still uses the Lightning port, it means that the cellphone cannot be marketed in various countries that are members of the European Union. However, there is an exception to this rule, namely the rule only applies to devices that can be recharged using a cable, while devices that can only be recharged wirelessly are not affected.

The development of the USB-C standard itself is currently fairly rapid. The latest USB-C standard allows the port to deliver 240W of power, so it can be used on heavyweight gaming laptops, which usually require more than 200W of power.
