Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) has regulations to reduce the price of cellphone service which is too expensive. Apple ensures that it will comply with these rules.
The law for electronic repair (rights-to-repair) is the result of encouragement from President Joe Biden. He wants to crack down on what he calls exorbitant fees and other measures that raise prices for consumers.
Apple said it was ready to support the rule. iPhone manufacturers will provide spare parts, tools and manual documentation for repairing iPhones and computers to independent repair shops and consumers in the US.
Starting in 2019, Apple has distributed spare parts and manuals to a number of independent service locations. Meanwhile, last August, the company also supported the same law in California.
The rule requires companies to provide access to parts, tools and manuals for repairs to independent service providers and consumers at a reasonable price.
“We respect California’s new repair provisions throughout the United States,” said Apple’s vice president of service and operations, Brian Naumann, as quoted from Reuters, Wednesday (25/10/2023).
“Apple also believes consumers and businesses will benefit from rules to balance improvements with products that are integrated, useful and physically safe,” he added.
Director of the National Economic Council, Lael Brainard praised Apple’s decision. According to him, commitment from private companies can reduce costs for consumers and eliminate unnecessary waste.
Brainard added that repairing electronic devices could save costs of up to US$49.6 billion per year. Additionally reduces 7 million tons of annual e-waste in the US and increases the number of small independent service stations.
