Apple will present major software updates for the iPhone and iPad at its upcoming developer conference. That happens at a time when more and more developers are critical of the company’s App Store policies.
The virtual event, which begins Monday, will also discuss software updates for the Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, as well as tools developers can use to build apps. The company also provides an update on the effort it is making to protect privacy.
Apple has been under fire lately for its policies with the App Store, especially Apple’s 30 percent commission. It led to a lingering lawsuit between the tech company and games company Epic Games, best known for shooting game Fortnite. Epic Games accuses Apple of monopolistic behavior and abuse of power.
Criticism
Dissatisfied developers increasingly dare to express their displeasure in public, partly because American lawmakers have repeatedly reprimanded Apple executives. But there is also criticism from large companies such as Microsoft and Spotify Technology.
The iPhone maker will try to convince developers that the Apple platform remains the best place to sell software. But also that it has developed new features to keep consumers attached to the company’s products.
It seems unlikely that Apple will announce major changes to App Store policies next week. The company is said to have generated about $22 billion last year from App Store commissions, according to estimates by data company Sensor Tower.
