Apple continued its streak of store closures in the United States following an increase in COVID-19 cases. Now, and as Bloomberg reports, Apple is now closing 16 stores in New York City alone, including critical locations like the Fifth Ave. store, Grand Central Station, and the World Trade Center. Retail stores in Staton Island and the Bronx were also affected.
Unlike previous closings, however, Apple is approaching the situation in New York in a different way. From Bloomberg:
Apple has temporarily closed many stores in recent weeks as it faces the highly contagious omicron variant, but is trying a different approach with the New York City shutdown. The company still allows customers to place orders online and pick them up in stores. Buyers will not be able to enter the store to browse or purchase anything on site, and Genius Bar technical support will not be available.
Apple has done something similar with its other recent store closings. Instead of curbside pickup, however, stores across the country have offered free two-hour delivery on select products.
This all follows a spike in COVID cases in New York City as the Omicron variant of the virus continues to spread. Apple has yet to give a date for any of its stores to reopen, but has continued to say it is monitoring conditions in every locality with stores affected by these closures.
The company had previously closed more than 20 outlets across the country in states such as Texas, Ohio and Florida.
