The criticism of Facebook continue. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, did not hesitate to show his annoyance against the misinformation that social networks themselves are causing by explaining how they collect personal information from their users.
The Apple executive had strong words against social networks during his participation in the conference Computers, Privacy and Data Protection. In addition, he mentioned that his company is developing a new function around the Privacy, call App Tracking Transparency.
According to the Genbeta portal, what he said Tim Cook was that social networks prioritize “conspiracy theories and incitement to violence”, because they are topics in which people usually participate with dedication. In such a way that the companies of these platforms have the opportunity to collect the personal information of the users.
“At a time of rampant disinformation and algorithm-fueled conspiracy theories, we cannot continue to turn a deaf ear to a technological theory that considers any form of use to be acceptable with the aim of collecting as much data as possible,” said the manager, according to Reuters.
That is why, after these words, Tim Cook decided to make the official announcement of App Tracking Transparency, a tool that will allow iPhone users to decide whether or not apps can track them across devices. Its launch would be scheduled for the end of March 2021; that is, it will be available with iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and tvOS 14.
According to Apple representatives, what it will do App Tracking Transparency is to require that applications ask the user for permission before tracking their data on the apps or websites of other companies. Also, in the section on settings, people will be able to see what the applications are.
