Apple Card turns 5 and remains US-only

The Apple Card celebrated its 5th anniversary this week. In fact, the bank card was launched on August 20, 2019 in the United States… and nothing has changed in that regard. There has been no international availability.

It is true that the absence of the Apple Card internationally is a bit surprising when we know that several clues, including trademark applications, have emerged. There have been applications in Canada, Japan and Europe. On the other hand, Tim Cook, the boss of Apple, has made statements showing a desire not to limit itself to the United States.

A statement even concerned France, this dates back to 2019. “We are thinking about expanding into several countries. Apple must rely on local partners”explained Tim Cook. “We have no intention of becoming a bank. In the United States, we work with Goldman Sachs. In France, we need to find a retail bank that is particularly agile. The world does not need a new credit card. It needs us to rethink the credit card.”added the man at the head of Apple.

The Apple Card is a credit card that offers 3% cashback on purchases in Apple Stores, 2% for purchases with Apple Pay and 1% for everything else. In the United States, Apple works with the Goldman Sachs bank, but this partnership will end in 2025. It will therefore be necessary to find a new partner. A few names have circulated, including American Express and the American bank Chase.

Apple and Goldman Sachs have had issues with customer service over disputed Apple Card transactions, as well as criticism over wait times for savings account withdrawals.
