According to Nikkeiin conjunction with Intellectual Property Landscape, Apple has reportedly filed about 248 automotive-related patent applications since 2000.
248 patents… The figure may surprise given the silence that hovers around this Apple Car. Moreover, the question of whether this project will one day see the light of day still remains unanswered.
The first patent application filings began in the course of 2008. Initially, the first patents revolved around compatibility between the iPhone and a connected vehicle. Then, the patents extended to the navigation system known as CarPlay.
Since 2015, patent application filings have exploded. There were around forty in 2016 and around sixty in 2017. Since then, Apple has completely broadened its spectrum, whether in terms of connectivity, battery management or even autonomous driving.
Apart from these patent filings and rumors of partnership, nothing filters on the side of Cupertino. The most optimistic speak of a car available in the course of 2025.
