Apple Begins Ordering OLED Panels for iPad Pro

Jakarta

Apple called already ordered panels OLED which will be used in iPad Pro and MacBook Pro next generation.

Reported by GSM Arena, Sunday (22/1/2023), the iPad Pro with an OLED panel will be available in 11-inch and 12.9-inch screen sizes, both of which are expected to arrive in 2024, while the MacBook Pro with a new OLED panel will be released in 2026. .

The same source also said that Apple is considering ordering a foldable display panel. But until now there has been no decision to continue the plan.

The OLED panels that will be used for the iPad Pro and MacBook lines are currently still being developed and are still being produced on a limited basis. Mass production of panels that will actually be used for commercial products still takes a long time.

Until now, Apple is still using LCD panels for the iPad Pro 11 and iPad Pro 12.9 inches, although Android tablet manufacturers and even laptops have started to switch to OLED panels.

Apple’s decision to switch to OLED panels is probably because many OLED panel manufacturers have lowered their panel prices, because previously the prices for these panels were relatively high compared to other types of panels.

It is estimated that the suppliers of OLED screens for the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro are Samsung Display and LG Display. Both of them can be said to have a strong relationship with Apple, because both of them are also suppliers of OLED panels for iPhones

After the OLED panels, it was previously reported that Apple would use microLED panels for iPhones and iPads in the future. According to a report by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple has been developing microLED display technology for six years.

The project, codenamed T159, started in 2017 with the aim of replacing displays provided by Apple partners such as Samsung and LG.

This will be Apple’s first self-designed display, following its own Apple Silicon chip. Gurman previously reported this microLED display would debut on the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra in 2024.

MicroLED displays use very small light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the backlight used by the display. The LED size is much smaller than the mini-LED technology used by the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

Such displays are more difficult to manufacture, but can offer more accurate colors, darker blacks, and better contrast. MicroLED technology also does not result in screen burn-in which is commonly found in LCD or OLED panels.
