Apple and Broadcom are seeking to overturn Caltech’s January 2020 Wi-Fi patent infringement lawsuit, which resulted in fines totaling $ 1.1 billion applied to the two companies.
Apple et Broadcom seem asking the court to quash the results of the trial, because it was allegedly conducted with “multiple legal errors”.
The lawsuit, which ended in January 2020, declared Apple and Broadcom guilty of infringing patents owned by the California Institute of Technology for WiFi. Apple tried to invalidate the patent in the midst of the lawsuit in March, but failed.
During the lawsuit, attorneys for Caltech argued that a hypothetical licensing deal in 2010 for chips used in iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watch and other products would fetch around $ 1.40 for each Apple device. and 26 cents each for Broadcom. This calculation was used by the jury to apply a fine of $ 838 million to Apple in addition to $ 270 million to Broadcom.
On the contrary, according to Law360, Caltech claims that the conduct of Apple and Broadcom was “really striking”. For this reason, he asked the court to push the fine to over $ 2.2 billion, but the judge added only $ 66 million in fines.
At the moment, we don’t know what the court will decide, but it’s certainly another issue that comes on top of Apple’s long battle against Epic Games.
