Apple Announces App Tracking Transparency Arrival In Early Spring As Facebook Releases Complaints

Today, in the context of privacy day, Apple announced that the App Tracking Transparency feature, which will allow us decide whether or not apps can track us, will arrive early spring. A measure that Facebook, during its shareholders conference, has protested once again.

A system that allows us to choose, nothing more

It was already last year when Apple announced App Tracking Transparency. A system that launches a warning to accept or reject the request when an app wants to access the identifier of our device. This identifier is used primarily for tracking both within apps and on the web.

The entry into force of this new permit, identical to what apps have to ask to access the camera, our photos, the location, etc. should have gone into effect last year, but Apple delayed it to allow the industry to make any necessary adjustments. Now Apple has confirmed that this functionality will arrive in early spring, that is, around March 20 of this year. Along with the announcement Apple has given some extra details about the functionality:

  • Application developers cannot require you to allow tracking in order to use all the functions of the application.
  • If you select “Ask App not to Track”, the developer will not be able to access the system advertising identifier (IDFA), which is often used for tracking.
  • If we learn that a developer is tracking users who ask not to be tracked, we will require that they update their practices to respect their choice or their application may be rejected from the App Store.

“I think people are smart and some want to share more data than others. Ask them. Always ask them.” -Steve Jobs.

According to the information we have, the next beta of the iPhone and iPad operating system, version 14.5, will start the testing process for this function. Until now we thought that the new protection measure would be activated by server, but It seems that it will be with the arrival of iOS 14.5 that we can all enjoy it.

Mark Zuckerberg’s complaints about privacy

Facebook has already voiced its opposition in the past to having to ask for permission to track users. Something that many company employees describe as “cynical.” Now, on the occasion of the company’s shareholders’ conference, its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has launched the following accusations:

Apple has every incentive to use its dominant platform position to interfere with the operation of our applications and other applications, something they do regularly. They say they do it to help people, but the movements clearly respond to their competitive interests.

The truth is that the executive has not clarified what interests Apple would have in allegedly damaging a company that does not compete with it in any market nor has it given arguments to support your claim that Apple is “one of the largest competitors [de Facebook]”.

It should be noted that what Apple proposes with the new protection that will arrive in iOS 14.5 is that we, as users, have the possibility to choose if we want to give access to an identifier that can be used to track us. Just like the system asks us for permission to access our location, our music, the microphone or our calendar. As Steve Jobs said in the All Things Digital 2010: “I think people are smart and some want to share more data than others. Ask them. Always ask them.”
