02/03/2021 – Between Facebook
and Apple
the mood has been icy for a long time. Now Apple boss Tim Cook is attacking the social network unusually sharp and clear.
by Sebastian Halm
Cook intervened in a keynote at the conference Computers, Privacy & Data Protection
on the one hand, the excessive hunger for data on the social network (the name of which was not mentioned in the speech, but everyone understood). On the other hand, he criticized Facebook’s policy of tolerating the spread of confused conspiracy theories in order to promote traffic and length of stay. As a result of this policy, he named among other things the spread of vaccination skepticism and opposition and aiding in recruiting right-wing radical groups. Not all user engagement is good engagement, Cook said.
Cook advocated stronger data protection laws in the US and brought a counterpart to the European GDPR into play.
In one omission, Facebook’s return carriage took place – the social media group accused Apple of using its app store as an instrument for market control.
Facebook and Apple have long been taking different courses with programmed crash potential: Apple is promoting itself as a data protection tech company and has given its iOS a blocking tool for cross-device tracking. As one of the most important device manufacturers, Apple is thus cutting the foundations of Facebook’s business model.
