It is not Apple’s first foray into the world of sports, as its content offer includes the Ted Lasso series, which deals with the life and challenges of a new coach in English football. For the series, whose rights are owned by Apple +, it will pay 500,000 pounds (588,000 euros) to the Premier League for a license use agreement.
Apple is developing an untitled Formula 1 movie starring Brad Pitt and directed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski with British driver Lewis Hamilton as producer.
To this must be added Magic Johnson’s documentary series, They Call Me Magic and Greatness Code, about the lives of some prominent sports figures.
Apart from Apple, Amazon Prime is one of the most active platforms in this field, with documentaries on Serena Williams, Paul Pogba or the Euroleague.
Netflix has not opted, for the moment, for the purchase of audiovisual rights for competitions, but it does have agreements with Formula 1 to produce its documentary series. He also signed agreements with the PGA Tour and the ATP and WTA tennis circuits.
Dazn is also reinforcing its content offering beyond competitions and match day, and has launched several documentary series. The last of them, focused on Ronaldo Nazario, former player and president of Real Valladolid.
