When a company produces a popular, high-quality product – like the AirPods Pro – there are bound to be knockoffs, aka KW. Nowadays, counterfeit devices have become so sophisticated that they look very similar to the real thing.
But that’s only the outside, it’s a different story on the inside. Lumafield shows a comparison of the 2nd generation Apple AirPods Pro vs KW products. 3D scanning shows a clear difference in internal quality between “real” and “fake” products.
The main points of interest they analyzed were the battery, design quality and circuitry. Starting from the battery, AirPods seem to use a special battery that matches the design of the headphones.

In contrast, both counterfeit products use pocket batteries stuffed inside their casings. These less sophisticated batteries have the potential to pose increased risks to users.
As for the circuitry, we can see a big difference between the Apple product and the two fake products. If we look at a picture of a fake headphone, we will see its components connected by a lot of messy cables.
We can also see some sloppy soldering where the cables connect. This doesn’t appear in Apple’s headphones, which use flexible printed circuit boards to make use of limited space.
The company also pointed out that counterfeit products have fewer microphones, resulting in poorer sound quality.
Moving on to the quality of the product, one of the fake ones does not have a wireless charging feature while the other one does not have a magnet to attach it to the charging case. Apple products have both of these features.
While we all know that counterfeit products are inferior in quality to genuine products, it is interesting to know in detail why genuine products are better. This difference is similar if we compare headphones that imitate Samsung products or other brands.
