Apple announced on Monday evening that we can expect the AirPods 4 this year. The Cupertino company also reports that the existing AirPods Max and Max Pro (the headphones) will not receive successors, but will receive new options.
The last time we got a new set of AirPods was in 2021. Back then, Apple added spatial audio to the arsenal of wireless earbuds. They also got a new design. At the time, the AirPods 3 did not officially replace the AirPods 2, as the predecessor remained available for sale. The AirPods 4, however, are supposed to replace both products. So we get two models in the new range, which have a lot in common.

The design of both AirPods 4 models is very similar to the design of the AirPods 3. You can see this as a real iteration. Fortunately, they do get a major upgrade in the audio department, as Apple has added the H2 processor this time around. This chipset gives the earbuds access to Voice Isolation (voice isolation, which can filter out background noise well), Personal Spatial Audio (personal spatial audio) and more.
The most expensive model in the series will be equipped with Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode and Adaptive Audio. The charging case has also been considered: it now features a USB-C port, allowing you to charge both an iPhone and your AirPods case with one charger. There is also wireless charging, allowing you to supply the case with energy using a Qi charger.
Both AirPods 4 models will be released on September 20 and are available for pre-order starting today. The variants will cost $129 and $179, respectively.
AirPods Pro 2- en AirPods Max-updates
Although there will be no successors to the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro Max, we can count on new possibilities. The former product will get hearing protection, which is active by default. Furthermore, the Pro 2 earplugs will get a hearing test and can serve as a hearing aid, with which you can amplify specific sounds. These options will be available later this year via an update, but are still waiting for approval from the watchdog FDA.
The AirPods Max will get a number of new color options, namely black, blue, purple and orange, as well as a USB-C port. This means that you can also charge these headphones ‘normally’ with a USB-C charger; this can be the same one you use for your iPhone or iPad. The new version will be available from September 20, for the same price as the current model.
