Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Apple was accused of lying during the launch of the iPhone 15 last week. This is related to the ‘carbon neutral’ label attached to the Watch 9 smart watch in an event entitled Wonderlust.

However, this claim was denied by University of Hawaii climate scientist David Ho. According to him, Apple’s marketing can confuse the public.

David Ho explained that there is no single product that is truly carbon neutral. Jokingly, he explained that the Apple label might be possible if the Watch 9 sucked Co2 directly from the atmosphere.

In fact, he called the claim ridiculous. Because the solution provided is not to reduce consumption of a product.

“There are no products that are carbon neutral. It’s a bit ridiculous. This gives consumers the idea that there is a way out of this problem without reducing consumption,” he explained, quoted from MacWorld, Monday (18/9/2023).

Instead of calling it carbon neutral, Apple should label its products as environmentally friendly. Apart from that, it can also be said to not produce excessive carbon emissions.

David Ho added that ships that are running still need fuel. But responsible companies invest in conservation and restoration projects so that they can absorb Co2 and the Earth’s temperature does not rise.

Additionally, there is a weak attempt to bind carbon to the product. Watches also do not play any role in creating emissions credits.

Apple declined to comment on the record. However, the company explained that it had adopted standards such as Verra and also carried out verification via satellite and other technology.

But another problem arose. Because in a report, referring to Apple, Verra also apparently does not reduce additional carbon.

The Guardian’s report states that 90% of Verra’s projects do not actually eliminate it. In fact, the results of the investigation stated that many of Verra’s projects encouraged destruction in other sectors.
