NY. An appeals court on Thursday reimposed the gag order that prevented Donald Trump from commenting on court personnel in the former president’s ongoing trial for financial fraud in New York.
The four-judge panel’s decision comes two weeks after an individual judge put the order on hold pending the appeal process.
Judge Arthur Engoron imposed the order on October 3 after Trump posted derogatory comments online against the judge’s assistant. The message, which included unfounded content about the assistant’s personal life, was posted on the internet on the second day of the trial for the lawsuit filed by New York State Attorney General Letitia James.
James maintains that Trump inflated his wealth in financial documents he filed to obtain loans and conduct other transactions. The former Republican president denies having committed any crime.
Engoron fined Trump $15,000 for violating the gag order and extended it to his lawyers when they questioned the role of employee Alison Greenfield, whose role is to stand next to the judge on the bench, exchange notes with him and advise him during witness statements.
Trump’s lawyers filed a lawsuit against Engoron accusing him of abuse of power over the gag order. A state law allows lawsuits to be filed against certain court decisions.
