– Appeals court grants temporary stay in Texas
An appeals court on Thursday granted a temporary reprieve to the floating barrier installed by Texas on the Rio Grande to prevent the crossing of migrants from Mexico.

This “administrative stay” decision comes the day after a federal court order gave the government of this southern US state nine days to remove the barrier installed in July, citing “the enormous tensions it has caused on U.S.-Mexico relations,” as well as “threats to human life and obstruction of free and safe navigation.” The Republican governor of Texas immediately announced that he was appealing this decision.
Humanitarian and diplomatic problem
The Justice Department in Washington filed a lawsuit against Texas, accusing the buoys of creating a humanitarian and diplomatic problem because they violate border treaties with Mexico.
For several years, right-wing elected officials, such as Texas Governor Greg Abbott, have denounced the arrivals of illegal immigrants, which they describe as an “invasion”. But the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden says the number of illegal crossings has plummeted since new asylum rules were introduced.
