A vehicle crashed into the entrance gate to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s residence on Wednesday morning. Details of the incident, which was apparently intentional, were refused by the police on the spot with regard to the investigation. She detained the driver. Police are now searching the vehicle, paramedics and firefighters are also present.
On the side of the car are the inscriptions “You damn murderers of children and the elderly” (Ihr verdammten Kinder und alte Menschen-Mörder) and also “Stop globalization policy”, writes Reuters.
So far, there are no reports of anyone being injured.
According to Die Welt, the car had a license plate belonging to the city of Lippe in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Impact to the gate according to the damage does not indicate a high speed. At the entrance gate to the Chancellery, several metal profiles were damaged and bent. The left front part with headlights was visibly damaged on the car.
After arresting a man confined to a wheelchair, police searched the car. A unit with a dog was also called. Firefighters subsequently rescued the car and parked it near the scene of the incident.
According to Reuters, the police do not assume that the incident was a radical attack. The security of Merkel and other cabinet members who sat in the Chancellery at the time of the incident was not compromised.
Merkel had a video conference scheduled for Wednesday morning with the prime ministers of the individual federal states. The topic was the coronavirus pandemic and related measures.
