App developers have to do it again!

One of the highlights of the “California streaming” event was the presented “Apple ProMotion” technology, which should guarantee the two new iPhone 13 Pro models a refresh rate of 10 to 120 Hertz. It’s just stupid when, as a Canadian developer discovered, the fast display cannot be programmed for third-party applications.

Apple ProMotion is set to change everything

The new Apple iPhone 13 series – consisting of four new models – has been official since September 14, 2021 and since last week on Friday (24/09/21) also in the Apple Store or online available from 799 euros. One of the very special innovations was display technology called Apple ProMotion, which was exclusively intended for the two Pro models. This means a maximum refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz. The company describes its new feature as follows:

“With ProMotion there are no settings. Refresh rates depend on what is happening on the display. If your game drops to 30 fps, ProMotion will also reduce the rate to 30 fps. If you watch a video that was recorded at 24 fps, it will also play back at 24 fps. All of this saves energy. With ProMotion it feels like reaching through the display and touching the code. “

Third-party developer without access to ProMotion

However, a Canadian app developer has now discovered that he cannot activate the fast refresh rate for his application. Although it is possible to activate the typical scroll movements, the app-related animations have to get by with the standard rate of 60 Hertz, which of course leads to optical irregularities. Apple’s own applications do not show this phenomenon. The colleagues from MacRumors had taken on the subject and have since received an answer from Apple.

Apple responded immediately

All third-party apps that want to take full advantage of Apple ProMotion technology with a maximum of 120 Hertz can do that too. All you have to do is add an entry to the plist (property list) of your app so that your application can use the full refresh rates. A corresponding documentation Apple has already released.

Standard user interface animations, on the other hand, also benefit in all third-party applications from the higher and lower frame rates that are available with the Apple ProMotion without the developer having to program anything. Animation errors that were created by the “core animation” will be corrected with the next software update.
