Apollo 14 Astronaut Alan Shepard Makes History with First Golf Swing on the Moon in 1971

SPACE — On February 6, 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Alan Shepard became the first person to hit a golf ball on the moon. Although he was there to conduct scientific research, the impromptu golf game was actually just for fun, and was broadcast live on television.

Shepard makes a makeshift golf club with a six-iron head that he smuggled from Earth. He attached it to the handle of the lunar excavation tool.

Shepard brought two golf balls for him to hit. Since his spacesuit wasn’t very flexible, he could only swing it with one hand.

One of the balls went into a nearby crater. However, he stated that another ball flew for miles, tens of kilometers. Source: Space.com
