The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES) reported that three agents of the National Civil Police (PNC) threatened a journalist and a photojournalist from Diario Co Latino, when they were reporting on the arrest of a person dedicated to cleaning the windshields of vehicles circulating in front of Cuscatlán Park, in San Salvador.
The incident occurred on August 23, 2024, when journalists from Diario Co Latino observed the moment that the PNC agents approached the man, who was doing his job on 25th Avenue South, took him onto the sidewalk, searched him and then began to abuse and beat him.
When they approached to document the situation and duly identified themselves as members of the press, one of the agents prohibited them from taking photographs of the event, despite the fact that they were in a public street, and warned them that if they published the photographs “they already knew” which media outlet they belonged to.
APES called on all public security institutions, especially members of the security forces, not to restrict journalistic work and to always respect the right to freedom of the press, as recognized by the Constitution and international regulations.
