Suara.com – Some time ago it was found cat and dog the infected corona virus Covid-19 from their owners, A study also shows cats and dogs can suffer from respiratory problems after contracting the corona virus.
Researchers say pet owners infected with the coronavirus should stay away from their pets in the midst of the current pandemic.
Because the Covid-19 corona virus can be transmitted in the opposite direction, such as from pets to humans. So scientists from the University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada analyzed samples from pets of coronavirus patients.
They collected Covid-19 test results from 17 cats, 18 dogs and 1 ferret. One cat shows uncertain results, but the other is negative which means that it is not infected with the Covid-19 corona virus.
Seven cats (88 percent) and two dogs (20 percent) have antibodies to the Covid-19 corona virus, which means that there has been a previous infection.
“These preliminary results suggest that a large proportion of household pets of people with the Covid-19 corona virus become infected,” said study leader Prof. Dorothee Bienzle. The Sun.
All cats with uncertain or positive swab results for the Covid-19 corona virus suffer from respiratory diseases or other diseases experienced by their owners.
Two dogs that had positive IgG antibody results, showed past infection and one of them had episodes of respiratory disease.
“The transmission of the Covid-19 corona virus from mink to humans has been reported to occur in mink farms with a high proportion of infected animals being kept in close proximity and cared for by humans,” he explained.
Meanwhile, there has never been a report of transmission of the corona virus from pets to their owners. However, the virus changes little or nothing after human-to-animal transmission, so such back-transmission is possible.
There is insufficient evidence from various studies, recommending that people infected with the Covid-19 corona virus should isolate themselves from maintaining a distance from their pets.
“There is currently no reported evidence of the Covid-19 coronavirus from pets to humans,” said Prof Tim Morris, of the University of Nottingham.
In a household who is positive for the Covid-19 corona virus, it is more important and makes sense for human-to-human transmission than human-to-animal transmission or vice versa.
In households that are self-isolating or people who are prone to being infected with the corona virus must isolate themselves, the presence of pets can be a positive factor for their mental health.
“Therefore, it is unfortunate if excessive attention to these findings causes concern for animal owners who are susceptible to infection with the corona virus. It has the potential to even cause some people to consider leaving or returning their pets,” he explained.
According to the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, simple biosecurity and hygiene measures should still be taken when keeping animals at home, including regular hand washing and proper waste management.
