AP and OpenAI Enter News Sharing Agreement: Training Language Models

The Associated Press (AP) and OpenAI have entered into a news sharing agreement to train language models.

What is known

The two-year deal gives OpenAI access to select news content and technology from the AP archives dating back to 1985. The company uses this data to improve the performance of future iterations of ChatGPT and related tools.

The parties have not yet decided on the details of the deal. Apparently, as part of the exchange, AP will gain access to the patented OpenAI technology.

AP does not use generative AI to write articles, but uses similar technologies to automate company profit and loss reports, local sports coverage, and other types of articles. In addition, the agency uses such tools to translate weather reports into Spanish.
