MOSCOW, KOMPAS.TVRussian President Vladimir Putin again urged the West on Thursday (12/23/2021) to move quickly to meet Russia’s demand for security guarantees. The guarantee is to prevent NATO’s expansion into Ukraine, and the deployment of allied weapons in the country.

“We want to ensure our security,” Putin said at an annual news conference in Moscow Associated Press.

“We got it straight: there must be no further NATO expansion to the east,” he stressed, referring to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The Russian leader welcomed talks with the United States (US) scheduled to begin in Geneva, Switzerland next month. However, Putin warned, discussions would focus on Moscow’s request to which it must respond quickly.

Last week, Moscow submitted a draft security document asking NATO to deny membership to Ukraine and other ex-Soviet states. Also, canceling allied military deployments in Central and Eastern Europe.

However, the main principles of NATO membership are open to any country that meets the requirements. The US and its allies have stated that they will not provide Russia with the kind of guarantees in Ukraine that Putin is seeking. US officials are in talks with European allies before the Geneva talks begin.

Putin also accused the West of trying to make Ukraine ‘anti-Russian, by constantly supplying modern weapons and brainwashing the people’.

Russia, Putin said, could not continue to live in anticipation of the increasing security threat resulting from the deployment of Western weapons in Ukraine.
