Anyone who rents through Airbnb is no longer allowed to party

Airbnb is permanently banning customers from hosting parties in stays they booked through the platform. The American company had introduced a temporary party ban during the corona pandemic. Back then, places were often booked to hold lockdown parties.

Airbnb steps up the fight against partying tenants. It already banned parties in August last year, after tenants frequently misused the platform to hold illegal lockdown parties. Those parties sometimes also went to court† At the time, it sounded stern that “anyone who exhibits or allows that behavior does not belong on our platform.” Although the corona measures have now been relaxed, Airbnb is sticking to that position.

‘The measure has grown into much more than a health measure. It has become a fundamental part of our policy to protect landlords and their neighbors,” the statement said. According to Airbnb, the number of complaints about party behavior has fallen by 44 percent.

The rental platform does not provide a clear definition of a party, but it can be deduced from the text that the line is drawn in the event of nuisance and complaints from neighbors. Landlords can no longer indicate that parties are allowed on their property. Parties with ‘open invitations’, such as a Facebook event, have been banned for some time. Airbnb has also taken a string of measures against nearby areas known as “party houses” after a gathering of more than 100 people in San Francisco ended in a deadly shooting.

Airbnb does stop the ceiling on a maximum number of allowed guests. During the corona pandemic, stays were limited to 16 guests, but the company believes that ‘responsible’ family gatherings and group trips should remain possible. Anyone who does not comply with the rules risks being suspended or thrown off the platform. Last year, more than 6,600 members were suspended for that reason.
