Former member of the Australian Davis Cup team, Sam Groth, agrees to organize more team events in tennis. In the opening week of this season, the ATP Cup held its first edition.
Novak Djokovic, 17-time Grand Slam champion, led Serbia to win the title by finishing undefeated in the competition. The Davis Cup Finals and the Laver Cup are two team events scheduled for this year.
“I think you have a chance to watch them. Obviously, the team events have been successful,” said Groth on The First Serve.
Groth, a former world number 53, says having a member of the Big Three at a team event is a recipe for success. “But any event that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic will play will be a success,” added Groth.
Groth also suggests that with the right plan, even team events without big names could be a success. “I know that World Team Tennis this week has announced that they will contribute $ 1,000 for each player who takes part in the competition.
I think that with a team tennis structure where you are employed by an organization, this gives you more security in this environment. Obviously with World Tennis Team, this season may not go ahead but they have this security with their contract players, “said Groth.
Earlier this year, the ATP Cup had a solid inaugural edition. Some of the biggest players participated and the final was marked by a successful confrontation between Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, current No. 2 in the world.
