Anyone who wants to insure their fat bike will no longer be able to contact the ANWB from next month. The union will temporarily stop offering insurance on September 6, because the electric bicycles with fat tires are being stolen on the assembly line.
The ANWB also sees that many owners are tuning up their fat bikes, which can lead to unsafe situations in traffic. If an accident happens, the insurance will not cover it.
In recent years, fat bikes have not only become extremely popular among consumers, but unfortunately also among the thieves’ guild. According to ANWB, the question is not whether the bicycle will be stolen, but when.
The financial loss recovered from the ANWB has now risen to 800 percent of the premium, a spokesman said. “That is not sustainable and that is why we have to intervene,” he explains.
The decision not only applies to new customers, but also to the approximately ten thousand fat bike owners who already have insurance with the ANWB. These customers will soon hear when their policy will be terminated.
The union wants to develop a new insurance policy for this type of bicycle in the near future. It is not yet clear when this insurance will be available and how high the premium will be. The new insurance sets conditions for how you secure and store your fat bike.
